Bikeregister offers free entry to anti-bike crime database Quarter of a million bikes now signed up to crime curbing scheme.
Selectamark's Bikeregister - touted as the UK's largest bicycle register - will now be free to sign up to in an effort to curb bike theft.
Over a quarter of a million bicycles have been registered on the police-approved site Bikeregister.com.
Free registration is being offered as part of the firm's Bronze package and involves the cyclist entering their bike details online and printing their own Log Book, providing proof of ownership for the owner and potential buyers.
Cyclists signing up to the Silver package (costing £14.95) will also have Police approved marking added to their bike, while the Gold package (costing £24.95) also includes an electronic datatag for the bike.
According to Selectamark, one bike is stolen every minute of the day in the UK, with less than five per cent being returned to their owners.
The firm said: "These statistics highlight the importance of registering ownership of a bike and visibly marking the frame to act as a theft deterrent.
"By permanently marking a bike, and recording the details of that mark on a secure database the Police can trace it back to the owner if it is stolen and recovered. A deterrent sticker can be purchased to place on the bike frame as a warning to would-be thieves."

There seems to be much confusion regarding the optimum distance between car and cyclist when overtaking.
The 3ft rule seems to be universally accepted in the USA or UK but drivers need to consider experience of the cyclist they are about to overtake. Studies in the UK have indicated that the faster the car, then the wider the overtaking gap. For example, at 20mph, Cycling England recommend a 1.05m gap which extends to 1.5m if overtaking at 30mph.
Let's try and get this rule widely acknowledged to stop the 100 cyclist overtaking related deaths each year in the UK and dispel the confusion and ignorance of both road users.

San Luis Obispo, CA, 16 August 2008 - Great Britain's Bradley Wiggins fulfilled all expectations by netting the gold medal in the Beijing Olympic Games individual pursuit on Saturday.
24 hours after setting a new Olympic record during the qualifying round, Wiggins saw off New Zeland's Hayden Roulston to take his first Olympic gold of 2008 for his country. Another British rider, Steven Burke, took bronze.
For Wiggins - a rider with Team Columbia when not in Great Britain colours like at Beijing - this is his second straight individual pursuit title at Olympic level.
The Londoner now goes on to take part in the team pursuit on Sunday before gunning for a third gold with Mark Cavendish in the Madison.
"The final round of the individual pursuit was really controlled, basicaly I was just trying not to go in too deep." Wiggins said after his first Olympic triumph.
"To do it all over again, and then go again two hours later was really tough, though. And it's been a long year building up for the Olympics."
" The next challenge for me will be the team pursuit, but I've done that before and I've been there before. On top of that, we've trained really hard for this."
Asked if he could get three gold medals, Wiggins was confident but cautious. "The Danes will give us a good run for our money in the team pursuit and I might struggle a bit in tomorrow morning [in the qualifying round] But by the evening I'm sure I'll be back on top of it."
"I've got really strong team-mates around me, this isn't a one-man band after all."
"All four of us, me and the three back in the Olympic village, are up for this team pursuit as well and then for the Madison Cav [Mark Cavendish] has got great form too. It's all looking very good - really really promising."

Giant is proud to support the Olympic dream by sponsoring cyclists from all different disciplines as they pursue victory in Beijing. Their paths may differ, but whether they focus on road or dirt, and whether they race against the clock or against competitors from other nations, all of these athletes have two things in common: they ride Giant bikes and they have stories to tell.
